REGENERATION – Born Again by the Spirit
Regeneration is the supernatural act of God by which He imparts spiritual life to the sinner, making them a new creation in Christ. This is what Jesus referred to when He said, “You must be born again” (John 3:7). It is the beginning of spiritual life—a rebirth by the power of the Holy Spirit.
1. What is Regeneration?
Regeneration means to be made alive spiritually. Before salvation, we were dead in sin (Ephesians 2:1). Regeneration is the internal transformation in which God replaces a heart of stone with a heart of flesh (Ezekiel 36:26), enabling a person to respond to the gospel in faith and repentance.
It is not something we do; it is something God does in us. Just as a baby does not cause its own birth, so the believer does not initiate their own regeneration.
“He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit.” —Titus 3:5
2. The Role of the Holy Spirit
Regeneration is the work of the Holy Spirit. He applies the finished work of Christ to the sinner’s heart, giving new desires, new affections, and the capacity to believe.
“That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.” —John 3:6
Without the Holy Spirit’s regenerating work, no one can truly understand or receive the things of God (1 Corinthians 2:14).
3. A New Nature, a New Life
The result of regeneration is a radical transformation. The old self dies, and a new self is born—created to walk in righteousness and holiness.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” —2 Corinthians 5:17
The regenerated person begins to hate sin and love righteousness. There is a deep inward change that affects every aspect of life—thoughts, speech, desires, and actions.
4. The Connection Between Regeneration and Faith
Regeneration precedes saving faith. That means God must give us life before we can truly believe. Our sinful nature is incapable of producing genuine faith on its own.
“No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him.” —John 6:44
The Holy Spirit quickens the heart so that faith becomes possible. This is why salvation is entirely by grace —even our ability to believe is a gift from God (Ephesians 2:8–9).
5. Evidence of Regeneration
A regenerated person shows visible fruit of spiritual life:
1. A hunger for God’s Word
2. Conviction of sin and repentance
3. Love for Christ and His people
4. A transformed character (Galatians 5:22–23)
While regeneration is invisible, its effects are undeniable.
6. Regeneration is Permanent
Once God gives new birth, it cannot be undone. Regeneration is not temporary or partial—it is a definitive and irrevocable act of God that initiates a lifelong process of sanctification.
“He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” —Philippians 1:6
7. Why Must We Be Born Again?
Because without it, we remain spiritually dead, hostile to God, and enslaved to sin. Religion, morality, or good behavior cannot produce new life. Only the Spirit of God can raise a dead heart to life.
“Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” —John 3:3
This is not optional—it is essential for eternal life.
Conclusion: The Miracle of New Birth
Regeneration is the first spark of spiritual life in the soul. It is the divine miracle that turns sinners into saints, darkness into light, and spiritual death into life eternal. To be born again is to begin a new journey—one that leads to conformity with Christ and eternal glory with God.
